Indian citizens, NRIs, and individuals who do not live in Karnataka can purchase non-farming land in the state. However, there are limitations on agricultural property purchases. Before 2015, only peasants from Karnataka could own agricultural land in the state; they had to be from the state and have an agricultural history or ownership of agricultural property. Non-agriculturists in Karnataka refer to individuals who had no agricultural land or earned more than two lakhs a year from non-agricultural activities. Therefore, a non-agriculturist was unable to purchase agricultural property in Karnataka before 2015.
Karnataka ended its prohibition on non-agriculturists purchasing and selling agricultural land in 2020. There are no restrictions on who may own farmland in Karnataka anymore, including non-agricultural institutions and corporations. Legally, anybody with a maximum income of Rs 25 lakhs per year can own agricultural property, regardless of their family background. In June 2015, the income threshold was increased from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 25 lakh.
